To x64 or not to x64?, That is the question. - Metmet - 2005-8-21 Hi I'm looking at getting a new Turion-based notebook, that can be purchased pre-installed with either XP Pro SP2 or XP Pro x64 for the same price. I want to use the system to run Office 2003 Professional, run software linked to my Maths degree course and sync with a Windows Mobile based Pocket PC, as well as occasionally run a game or two. I also want to be able to run .NET apps, and possibly Visual Studio .NET 2003, as well as maybe some other tools for my comp sci modules. What I am wondering, is will going for XP Pro x64 now, even though its in its infancy, cause me any problems with doing these things at present? For example is there a 64-bit compatible version of the .NET Framework (M$ site seemed to suggest 1.1 SP1 worked on both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows  )? I would stick with XP Pro 32-bit, if I already had the system, but I feel I'd like to go for the 64-bit version seeing as I'd be getting a new Windows license anyway. Could I please get some advice on whether it's a good idea for these uses to get the system with XP x64, or whether I would be better settling for 32-bit XP? Thanks |
